（英文版） Originally published in 1865, the story "Dr. Marigold" was extremely successful, which Dickens's public performances of a play based it - fascinating and easy to read. Doctor (it is his given name) Marigold is a "Cheap Jack" or what we would call a street peddler. Doctor Marigold's fortunes reverse when he adopts a deaf and mute girl whose mother is dead and whose stepfather, owner of a traveling circus, beats her. This brief short story is a first person account of the life of a "Cheap-Jack", a kind of salesman or barker at fairs, who sells cheap, everyday items to the poor. Dickens clearly is in love with the typical non-stop patter or auctioneer's song that these men engaged in, and samples of these day-long chants make up much of the book. The story that moves all this forward is the man's love for his wife, daughter, and granddaughter. Dickens does his usual masterful job of pulling at your heartstrings and bringing everything to a good tear-jerking, happy ending.

（V） Martin Chuzzlewit is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. While writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. Like nearly all of Dickens' novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens.

Impressed by their quality, he succeeds in getting them published, although the identity of their author remains a mystery until a visitor comes calling.

（II） The Battle of Life is the only one of the five Christmas Books by Charles Dickens that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. (One scene takes place at Christmas time, but it is not the final scene.) The story bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two respects: it has a non-urban setting, and it is resolved with a romantic twist. It is even less of a social novel than is Cricket. As is typical with Dickens, the ending is a happy one. This novella was first published in 1846. Two sisters, Grace and Marion, live happily in an English village with their two servants, and their good-natured widower father Dr Jeddler. Marion, the younger sister, is betrothed to Alfred Heathfield, Jeddler's ward who is leaving the village to complete his studies. He entrusts Marion to Grace's care and makes a promise to return to win Marion's hand. On the day that Alfred is to return, however, it is discovered that Marion has run off. After nursing heartbreak, Alfred marries Grace instead of Marion and she bears him a daughter, also called Marion. On the birthday of Marion, Grace confides to Alfred that Marion has made a promise to explain her so-called "elopement" in person. Marion indeed appears that evening by sunset and explains her disappearance to the parties involved. It turns out that Marion has not "eloped" but has instead been living at her aunt Martha's place so as to allow Alfred to fall in love with Grace.

John Peerybingle, a carrier, lives with his young wife Dot, their baby boy and their nanny Tilly Slowboy. A cricket chirps on the hearth and acts as a guardian angel to the family. The title creature is a sort of barometer of life at the home of John Peerybingle and his much younger wife Dot. When things go well, the cricket on the hearth chirps; it is silent when there is sorrow. One day a mysterious elderly stranger comes to visit and takes up lodging at Peerybingle's house for a few days. The jealous old man, Tackleton, poisons John's mind about Dot, but the cricket through its supernatural powers restores John's confidence and all ends happily.

（I） Little Dorrit is a novel by Charles Dickens which satirises the shortcomings of both government and society, including the institution of debtors' prisons, where debtors were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The prison in this case is the Marshalsea, where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned. Dickens is also critical of the lack of a social safety net, the treatment and safety of industrial workers, as well the bureaucracy of the British Treasury, in the form of his fictional "Circumlocution Office". In addition he satirises the stratification of society that results from the British class system. In his Introduction, David Gates argues that "intensity of imagination is the gift from which Dickens's other great attributes derive: his eye and ear, his near-universal empathy, his ability to entertain both a sense of the ridiculous and a sense of ultimate significance." Dickens criticizes the hierarchical society which would demand such an impossible thing of a man, and also questions which class of their acquaintance are good people and true friends.
